Strange encounters with West Ham players
I've met a few West Ham players down the years but my overall was in the early 90's (no sponsor season) I'm in Browns (the top end Club not grotty strip pub).

Having a good time on a Saturday, with a cup game vs Arsenal in the morning to look forward to.

gets to about 1am and this black guy walks in on his own and just stands at the bar. I know him from somewhere, after a couple of glances over it's only Samassi Abou.

I dance over there Imbetweener style and say hello, he dosen't speak much English but told him I was a west ham supporter and he gave a big grin. I bought him a drink (Bud Ice) and he shook my hand wandered off onto the dance floor and was having himself a very nice time.

Highbury the following afternoon I'm hungover as fuck in the clock end and he's on the pitch.

Pretty sure Abou only played once at home v Arsenal, in the FA cup. Surprised you never mentioned that he scored.

Also, the game was on Tuesday, so he might have got over his night out three days later even if you didn't.

Re: Strange encounters with West Ham players
I met Bobby Moore, 1981/2
I was a roadsweeper around Fairlop.
He was a somewhat elusive footballing God.
He pulled into a garage a few yards ahead of me and started putting petrol into his car.
I stared at him in disbelief at seeing a hero made flesh.
He looked at me as if he was looking at someone who was looking at him like a hero made flesh.
"You're Bobby Moore!" I informed him
"Yes I am." he agreed.
He paid for his petrol and swept further down the street.

It was a brief moment for both of us, but I like to think, both of our lives were changed in that moment.

Have a mate, who worked at Reebok a while back, was at the 2006 fa cup final with him, was having a few with him in the Marriot beforehand, met Phil Parkes and Ian Pearce in there, Parkes getting the drinks in, my mate went to the toilet, i heard Parkes ask Pearce to "call him" on his mobile when my my mate got back! Pearce just told him to leave if he wanted..
Parkes told him my mate had fixed family a load of rbk gear so he couldn't just piss off...
Strange bit was they knew I could hear them...
Strange

Dragged my way out of Gatwick arrivals with wife and three small daughters /luggage to wait for the shuttle bus..plonked myself down on a seat and found myself next to Steve Lomas...he was very friendly for the time of day (very early morning)

In a Chinese restaurant in Snaresbrook after a game. Steve Lomas, his wife and his agent were at the next table. Mr Agent was loudly cunting off Paolo (who'd not had the best of games that day) and Steve was agreeing. Until he looked over and saw me, in a claret top, avidly listening.

Tony Cottee in Eddie Grimstead Honda in Romford. It was the day after we'd lost 3-0 at Newcastle and Les Sealey had had a blinder to keep the score respectable.

- I thought we were unlucky last night Tony.
- No we weren't.
- I mean we were unlucky to play Newcastle on the one night they were any good.

He didn't laugh. Which on reflection was the correct response.

Saw Christian Dailly in Romford as he came out of the gym with a fitness coach, the day before we played Palermo away. I thought 'sod it' and asked him for a picture, which my colleague took. He was really nice and didn't mind at all.

We posed - his arm went round my shoulders, my arm went round his waist - only to find a backpack, so my arm just kind of slipped until my hand was basically on his arse. Where it stayed, while my colleage faffed about with my phone.

Two come to mind, although nothing exciting.

I sat at the opposite table to Teddy Sheringham and his boy at a carvery in Buckhurst Hill in 2004. Teddy was at ours at the time and my brother and Dad we egging me on to say hello, which I refused because I couldn't stand him. Great player though.

Steve Lomas (gets about, dunnhe?) at Holborn Circus looking for Chancery Lane. I'd just jumped off as bus and he'd asked me for directions. It was only post offering directions that I realised that it was him and had a brief chat. A very nice man who was more than happy to indulge a supporter. Funny thing is a mate I worked with from Northern Ireland who absolutely hero worshipped the ground any Norn Iron player walked on was incredibly excited once I'd informed him.

I once bumped into Paul Hilton in Sainsburys, Newbury Park, one afternoon during the late 80's. He was pushing a shopping trolley along through the aisles.

Another occasion was during the mid 90's when Alan Taylor asked me for directions, at Chigwell Row, to the Prince Regent hotel, for one of those reunions they used to hold. He was quite gobsmacked when I recognised him and called him 'Alan' straight away.

Re: Strange encounters with West Ham players
Me and a mate was watching the Ireland v Holland Euro 96 play off in the Golden Lion in Romford, when half the West Ham squad walked in to watch it, Potts, Martin, Dowie etc.

Didn't speak to them but Moncur was constantly singing 'What an atmosphere' by Russ Abbott. Couldn't see that happening with today's squad!
